Makeup artist Fiona Stiles piqued our interest on social media when she posted a photo of a lipstick dubbed Queen of the Damned—the name of the dark lip palette in her kit. (“I’m a nerd and I give all my palettes names,” she explained.) What followed at the Critics’ Choice Awards was a “prairie goth” version of Lily Collins (nominated today for her first Golden Globe), which was an unexpected departure for the actress who is often compared to classic beauties like Audrey Hepburn.
Wearing a sequin and lace gown by Elie Saab that reminded us at Fashion Unfiltered of Interview with Vampire or Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas (minus the haphazard stitches, of course), Collins was, as she captioned on Instagram, like “little goth on the prairie.” (It’s safe to say that Laura Ingalls Wilder and her pigtail braids ain’t got nothing on this.) While oxblood lips have long been a season-less staple for edgy A-listers like Rihanna, Collins took things to the next level with the addition of a paled-out complexion and nightshade-tinted eyes. (Face painter Peter Philips crafted a similar concept for Dior’s Fall 2016 show, but replaced shadowy lids with “tangled” lashes.)
Unlike the rest of the A-listers attending that left us rather underwhelmed, Collins proved that taking a risk pays off. Lesson learned: Why play it safe on the holiday party circuit when you can swap a predictable tube of red for something a hell of a lot of more sexy and sinister?
