For female celebrities (with the exception of Alicia Keys), hitting the red carpet sans fake eyelashes would be like going without shoes—unthinkable. At the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, a few attendees opted for lash statements that were more dramatic than the usual standard-issue falsies. It’s yet more proof that eyelashes are becoming as much of a beauty conversation-starter as lip art. One singer whose lashes spoke volumes at the VMAs: Tinashe. For extreme fullness, makeup artist Michael Anthony applied a set of Flutter Evelyn Mink Eyelashes, cutting them into sections first for a more comfortable fit. And while all eyes were on Halsey’s new hairstyle, we zeroed in her super-long lashes. The spidery look was reminiscent of the falsies spotted at Marni’s Spring 2016 runway show.
Finally, if we had to give an award for “Best Lashes,” it would definitely go to model Ashley Graham. Her makeup pro, Vincent Oquendo, took what he called a “Frankenstein” approach when creating her faux lash look, using a mix of his favorites: dramatic falsies from Make Up For Ever in the middle, “a snippet” of Ardell Baby Wispies on the inner and outer corners and House of Lashes falsies in Siren on the outer corners. The trick to making it all work? “I used the side of my Tweezerman tweezers to roll Ashley’s lashes onto the false lashes to bond them together without curling them. If you curl false lashes or extensions will look like you hit the windshield—like your face was pressed against glass,” explains Oquendo. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
