Not that we ever need a reason wear power red, but if there was a time to break out your flashiest bullet, Saturday would be it. July 29 is National Lipstick Day, a holiday devoted to celebrating the power and splendor of this classic cosmetic.
Crimson may be bit of obvious choice, but as Pat McGrath, the reigning queen of makeup, noted backstage at Prada: "You can't get more independent than wearing a red lip. When you wear a red lip, it shows that you really know yourself." That said, celebrating makeup does call for a bit of outside-the-box creativity. Take a cue from Aaron de Mey at Thom Browne, where models' lips were layered with herringbone wool to three-dimensional effect, or add some bling to a basic neutral like Olivier Rousteing and Tom Pecheux at Balmain.
We also understand if you’d rather leave those avant-garde looks on the runway and embrace a more sidewalk-friendly pout instead, like the elegant fusion of Old Hollywood and "Russian espionage" face painter Charlotte Tilbury devised for Ulyana Sergeenko, or the "lollified" mouths that gleamed like freshly-licked suckers thanks to loads of gloss applied by Val Garland at Giambattista Valli. You can also give traditional crimson a cheeky twist with a quick make-out session in an effort to achieve the "snogged-off" finished spotted at Preen.
But no matter which direction you choose, one thing is for certain: no naked pouts allowed! If you need help getting dressed after perusing our gallery of gorgeous beauty inspo, head to your nearest MAC store or counter where they will be giving away free (yes, FREE) full-sized tubes of lipstick while supplies last. Run—don't walk.
