Welcome to “Show Notes,” in which FU’s critics offer an unfiltered peek at their musings and notebooks. For an in-depth analysis of the collections, don't miss our forthcoming "Report."
•There’s quite a rock-and-roll/ rockabilly vibe to Coach’s Spring 2017 menswear collection. The show notes cite “rebel youth” as part of the inspiration. Designer Stuart Vevers took notes from biker gang culture (but think more James Dean, less Hell’s Angels), B movies, beatniks, The Twilight Zone, and New York punk and hip-hop.
•The painted leather is really interesting.
•The bottle caps that adorn some of the jackets are cool, too.
•Love the trench coat with leather sleeves.
•The collection also aims to include “nostalgic iconography” that touches on surfers, westerns, and hot rods. This can be best seen in the prints, which include spaceships and cowboys. The best print by far is the little fox.
•The graphic tees are pretty great. This is not your father’s Coach.
•Very slick leather backpacks. Too bad they won’t be hitting stores until January—they’d be the perfect gift for college kids before school starts.
