Hood By Air is taking collaboration to a new level with a capsule collection of oversized raglan-sleeved shirts printed with images from the book PH & HBA—which, if you weren’t aware, featured photographs of archival HBA pieces, shot by Pieter Hugo in Jamaica.
Hugo’s arresting images star male porn stars, and Gully Queens (a gay community in Kingston who lives in a gully under the city), in stunning portraits that also showcase key design elements of designer Shayne Oliver’s work.
Fashion seems to be greatly intrigued by the world of pornography, with the likes of Bernhard Willhelm and Vivienne Westwood casting porn stars in their campaigns. HBA even had collaboration with PornHub for its Spring 2017 show. This venture, however, has a more serious tone to it, as homosexuality is illegal in Jamaica, making the situation for the Gully Queens incredibly heartbreaking. The shirts and images document the close-knit community’s painful situation. Hopefully the release of the project will remind people that although strides have been made in LGBTQ rights (with gay married being legalized in the US in 2015), there is still work to be done towards complete equality, not only here, but around the world.
There are seven shirts in the collection, which is available now on Hood By Air’s website. The shirts retail for $300 each, but for $1,500 you can have them all.
