Back when news first broke that the third season of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story would explore the murder of Gianni Versace, we threw Lady Gaga’s name into the mix of possible casting choices, specifically for Donatella. Well now, Us Weekley is reporting that this might, indeed, be a thing that is happening.
But before you head over to update the IMDB page, keep in mind that this is still kind of a rumor. Despite the fact that Us is confirming this, it’s source is unnamed, and none of the major players involved (Gaga, Murphy) have said anything about it—although the publication does mention that, at a panel, Murphy himself agreed that she would be a perfect casting choice.
Meanwhile, the house of Versace has publically come out against the television project, asking viewers to see the series as “a work of fiction.” Gaga is close friends with Donatella--she's starred in the brand's Spring 2014 campaign, as the designer, no less, and even wrote a song about the Italian icon. Would she be willing to put that relationship at risk for a role?
Or perhaps hiring an actress close to the house is Murphy’s way of trying to earn the Versaces' approval? That’s one hell of an olive branch to extend. Either way, Gaga—who is also chummy with Murphy, thanks to her roles on American Horror Story—is the one being put between a rock and a hard place.
