It seems Rihanna and Manolo Blahnik enjoyed working together so much on their collaborative footwear capsule, which debuted in March, they're doing it again, releasing a new collection this week.
Appropriately, the new collection, titled Savage, will be geared towards winter weather, featuring three new stiletto-heel boot styles: The Fallon, a calf-high, lace-front option with a fur trim; the Alexis, a knee-high, lace-front number with even more of a fur trim; and the Dominique, a laser-cut pony skin thigh-high boot with a sheepskin lining. The Fallon is an update on Blahnik and Riri’s Dancehall Cowgirl boots from their summer collaboration, which incidentally was an update on the high-heeled Timberland boot that was all the rage in the early 2000s. They say fashion is cyclical, so the aughts were due to make a comeback soon anyway.
Rihanna has been charming the fashion world a lot lately, but it’s Blahnik that seems to be the biggest surprise here. The shoe designer has been around for decades, and has occupied the mantle of “classic, aspirational footwear.” Lately, however, he seems to be cooler and more cutting edge than ever. His partnership with Rih over the summer was not only well-received, but also popular, being donned by J.Lo in her video for “Aint Your Mama”. Since then, Blahnik has also teamed up with Vetements for the latter’s subversive collection that was nothing but collaborations. It was hard to say which was more unexpected, that Vetements would choose to do the collection in the first place, or that Blahnik would agree to participate in the conceptual label’s project.
Is Mr. Blahnik reaching out to the younger fashion set to feel more relevant? Or is the fact that he seems to be partnering up with more people at this stage in his career merely a coincidence? Regardless, he seems to be having a ball exploring new avenues of creativity. Even in fashion, friendship is magic.
Savage will be available online and in select Manolo Blahnik boutiques on Wednesday.
