Jonathan Saunders’ First Campaign for DVF is a Love Letter to NYC

It even features real chess players

The first-ever Diane von Furstenberg campaign under Jonathan Saunders’ leadership has been unveiled today. In what the storied American label is calling an “ode to New York City,” the Fall 2017 ads feature real residents of the Big Apple, and the accompanying film includes a poem read by Brooklyn-based poet Rachel Kang.

Shot by Oliver Hadlee Pearch, who recently lensed Fendi’s Fall 2017 men’s campaign, the ads see models Luna Bijl, Yoon Young Bar, Angok Mayen, and Cara Taylor (the latter of whom just appeared in Calvin Klein’s ads) posing in places like Harlem, Tompkins Square Park, and Liberty Island alongside actual break dancers, chess players, and rope-jumpers.

“For what I dare to dream is the woman I will become,” reads Kang, who was specially commissioned to write a poem for the campaign about discovering the city and falling in love.

A bouquet of micro florals, leopard prints, and plush, colorful furs from Saunders’ Fall collection for the house are juxtaposed with the city’s grit in the best way. The entire thing seems somewhat nostalgic, and seems to perfectly encapsulate that feeling of freedom one has when moving to New York—or any big city, for that matter.

When it was announced in May that Saunders—one of London’s It designers—would be taking over at DVF, we wondered how his vision would work with the American brand’s girl-power aesthetic. As evidenced by this campaign, he’s doing great.
