LVMH today announced the 21 designers chosen as semifinalists for the fourth annual Young Fashion Designers Prize. More than a thousand candidates—around 1,200 to be exact—from 90 different countries applied for the coveted award, in which the victor will receive a 300,000-euro grant (about $317,500) and one year of mentorship from industry experts. The winner will be announced on June 16.

Among the candidates are 10 menswear designers, nine womenswear designers, and two menswear and womenswear designers, all hailing from places like Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and Russia. They include Tokyo-based unisex designer Yoon Anh of Ambush; British menswear designer and MAN participant Charles Jeffrey (whose innovative wares can be found in Dover Street Market New York’s latest installations); New Zealand womenswear designer Maggie Hewitt of Maggie Marilyn; Irish designer Richard Malone; and British designer Molly Goddard. (The latter two showed their Fall 2017 collections in London this week and last.)

According to LVMH, this year saw a spike in applications. “The increasing numbers of candidates for the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers prove once more the enthusiasm generated by the Prize, which is strongly committed to its international dimension,” read a statement.

The aforementioned crop of 21 pre-selected designers will now meet with 45 international fashion experts like Tim Blanks, Cathy Horyn, Patrick Demarchelier, and Kendall Jenner (what?), who will then announce the top eight finalists on March 2 in Paris. From there, a jury, which includes Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri, Loewe's Jonathan Anderson, and LVMH’s Delphine Arnault, will announce the winner this summer at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Three young fashion school graduates will also be awarded the Graduate Prize. (Psst, emerging designers, you can apply for this one until May 15.)

As we mentioned last month, the past three LVMH Prize winners have all been London-based: Thomas Tait, Marques’Almeida, and most recently, Grace Wales Bonner. While London is indeed a hotbed of young design talent, it would be nice to see LVMH take a cue from the runways this season and sprinkle in some diversity.
