Zac Posen has accomplished a lot since launching his signature line 15 years ago. He’s now helms multiple brands (Zac Posen, ZAC Zac Posen, and Brooks Brothers), his work is a red-carpet favorite, he’s become a bona fide celebrity thanks to his judge spot on Project Runway, he’s about to launch a cookbook, and now, he’s the star of a new documentary that chronicles his rise from new kid on the block to New York fashion mainstay. Directed by Sandy Chronopoulos, House of Z, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, looks at the ups and downs that have made Posen the designer—and the man—he is today.
While we have to wait until September 6 to see the full film, the trailer, which debuted today, already reveals that House of Z is essentially a fashion-fantasy-turned-nightmare, in which critics point fingers at Posen’s eccentricity and success becomes somewhat of a burden. The documentary also looks at Posen’s struggles to keep his business above ground at a time when everyone seemed to think his designs were obsolete.
But behind the drama, there are also endearing moments, like his childhood friend recalling Posen’s first experiences with fashion (it was with garbage bags, FYI) or Sean “Diddy” Combs, an early supporter of Posen’s brand, discussing the buzz that surrounded him during those first years (“Everybody wanted to meet him,” he says).
Indeed, House of Z is packed with all the fashion spectacle fans could hope for, but it’s also a touching tale of a young man who followed his dream, even when his dream started to fight back. The film will debut in its entirety on Vogue.com in September, but you can take a look at the new drama-filled trailer above.
