Victoria's Secret routinely changes the location of its annual spectacle, but this year, showing in Paris was a first. Would the city of light and high fashion have an effect on one of the biggest lingerie brands in the world? From some of the just-released images, it appears that it has.
Lingerie, while titillating, is most effective in intimate settings. The format of the VS fashion show, however, is huge—in addition to the celebrity-packed audience, the event is broadcast across the world. To compensate for the size, the brand usually goes above and beyond, adding in big-name performers (this year included Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and The Weeknd) and elaborate costuming. Sure, the details of a g-string can get blurred from far away, but those angel wings can be seen from space.
But this year it seems the biggest inspiration was couture—the ensembles looked more like lingerie than the costumes of previous years. The wings were artful, either appearing as an elaborate shoulder appliqué or a more significant sculptural piece (what were those organza wisps? So pretty!). The show was not without camp—there appeared to be an ode to South America, while the Pink collection borrowed elements from New York street style brands. But all-in-all it appears that the show (which airs December 5 on CBS) doesn't fall short in terms of joie de vivre.
