Thanks to the frantic pace of the digital age, the average person has the attention span of a goldfish. (No, seriously. This is a fact supported by an actual study.) Seeing as the fashion sphere changes its mind even faster, we decided to provide you with a condensed report from backstage this season. As much as we'd like to pen novels in the name of lipstick and hairspray, we get it—you're busy. Here, the beauty version of CliffsNotes (all facts, no fluff) that you can easily skim in eight seconds...because science says that's all the time you have.
CITY: New York
THE LOOK: Late 80s supermodel meets Baywatch beach babe
INSPO: Yasmin Le Bon on the cover of Elle and the original supermodel squad—Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Tatjana Patitz—shooting in the great outdoors with “tousled hair and sun-kissed skin.”
TOP TIPS: Smudge a brown shadow pencil on top and bottom lash lines, then apply mascara just at the roots for “definition” that doesn’t look “heavy,” says Kendal. Skip highlighter (NYC’s humidity provides ample amounts of shine) and swap powder for blotting papers that absorb excess oil without adding weight. Fill in and brush up brows for “that 80s feeling.”
Mist hair with water (or try this look straight out of the shower), then saturate strands with “at least one, maybe two” tubes of styling cream. Pull hair up into a pony with a bristle brush and twist the tail onto itself, securing the top knot in place with bobby pins. Pull a piece out in front for a “sexy touch,” says Gilbert.
WORDS FROM THE WISE: If you want the Flairosol water gun Gilbert was armed with backstage (and trust us, you do), head to Delorme on Passage de l’Industrie in Paris. It’s a shop typically reserved for pros but if you ask for Odile’s spray bottle, “you won’t have a problem” getting your hands on it, she laughed. That, or simply add to cart on Amazon.
Also, will the 80s be the decade to reference for Spring 2017? According Adam Selman and Thakoon the era of excess is back.
