The Biggest Hair Trend for Fall 2017? Leave It Alone!

Plus, how to get a realistic “summertime” glow in the middle of winter

Thanks to the frantic pace of the digital age, the average person has the attention span of a goldfish. (No, seriously. This is a fact supported by an actual study.) Seeing as the fashion sphere changes its mind even faster, we decided to provide you with a condensed report from backstage this season. As much as we’d like to pen novels in the name of lipstick and hairspray, we get it—you’re busy. Here, the beauty version of CliffsNotes (all facts, no fluff) that you can easily skim in eight seconds…because science says that’s all the time you have.

SHOW: 3.1 Phillip Lim

CITY: New York

KEY PLAYERS: Makeup artist Francelle Daly, Hairstylist Duffy, Manicurist Jin Soon

THE LOOK: Barely there. The bold set and shocking colors in the collection more than made up for the lack of hair and makeup.

INSPO: Blitz Kids (like Boy George) and New Romanticism

BEAUTY MVPs: NARS Multiple in Copacabana, NARS Highlighting Blush in Miss Liberty, KMS California SilkSheen Leave-in Conditioner, KMS California HairStay Medium Hold Spray, Jin Soon Nail Polish in Charade (a “smoky teal”)

TOP TIPS:  To capture the “inner glow of all the girls” in the designer’s diverse cast, Daly worked tinted moisturizer into complexions with her hands, but cancelled any slick spots (like the T-Zone, forehead, and chin) with translucent powder. To create a “summertime” glow in the middle of winter, she applied a creamy bronze highlighter across the cheekbones, the forehead, and the bow of the lip before bumping up the effect with a shimmery nude blush.

WORDS FROM THE WISE: “The biggest mistake we always make is to brush and comb our hair before we even consider it,” said Duffy who exaggerated each models natural texture. “We’ve all been trained to wet and brush our hair, blow-dry it straight, put a lot of product in, blow-dry it again, get a curling iron, put some spray on [strands], and force texture back into hair. But individually, we all have beautiful texture already in our hair.” Use a leave-in conditioner to encourage curls, or coax out kinks and waves via the pro’s technique: Apply a thermal spray, twist hair into two buns, and dry strands with a diffuser.

TREND TALLY: Perfect ranks of runway robots are a thing of the past. Individuality ruled at Alexander Wang, Rosie Assoulin, and Public School.
