At Chanel Couture, You Can Teach a Ponytail New Tricks

Haute hair

We saw quite a few ponytails on the Couture catwalks this week (Miu Miu, Dior, and Giambattista Valli to name just three), but none were haute-r than Chanel. “I didn’t want to do an ordinary ponytail under the hats,” explained mane master Sam McKnight. “So, we did a double twisted [tail], then covered it in a fine net, almost like a snood.” The result was “sculptural, heavy, and solid,” which reflected the collection’s “architectural shapes,” added McKnight. A simple center part, a spritz of the pro’s Modern Hairspray, and a bit of wax lent strands a sleek and shiny finish that echoed the patent boots with Lucite heels. For those who long for the waist-grazing lengths this look requires, there’s still hope—McKnight confirmed via email that the twisted tails were crafted with extensions.

As for the painterly lids provided by makeup artist Tom Pecheux, you’ll need to tap into your inner artiste…and just about every eyeshadow color in your arsenal. Skip the pearly highlighter and reach for a ruby red to really punctuate your tear ducts. Then, stomp the banks of the Seine like you own them—much like German-born Karl Lagerfeld, who received the Médaille Grand Vermeil de la Ville and was dubbed a “true Parisian” by Anne Hidalgo, the city’s mayor. As those of us across the pond celebrate the Fourth of July, may we (and American politicians) be reminded that home is where your heart is—no matter where you started out.
