Nicolas Ghesquière took us to Atlantis this morning. No, the theme has nothing to do with the buckets of rain that poured down on guests as they entered the Fondation Louis Vuitton, but rather the mood Ghesquière aimed to create. His set was dark, cool, and covered with mirrored pillars that looked like relics from a lost world. The collection, however, felt more Blade Runner than submerged metropolis, save a graphic bodysuit that looked ready for an exploratory dive. There was a notable nod to sport here in everything from the sculpted jackets, thick-soled kicks (the platform booties will be the shoe for next season—just you watch) and chevron motifs to the leopard-print backpack, striped details, and punchy palette. Ghesquière balanced these structured, athletic elements with fluid silks printed in old world patterns, puckered puff-sleeve blouses, and a delicate slip dress that was toughened up with knee-high combat boots. Ghesquière’s bold, futuristic aesthetic signatures stood out in this collection—perhaps more so than in any of his previous Vuitton outings. And while there may not have been an obvious new It bag here, this lineup offered a myriad of must-have separates that discerning cool girls will rush to add to their closets.
