Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear
March 6, 2018
With Phoebe Philo having left and Hedi Slimane waiting until Spring 2018 to make his debut, Céline was among the brands showing an interim collection this season. The label’s in-house design team showed the latest collection in the Rue Vivienne showroom on racks and displays. Spokespersons for the brand only offered “great tailoring and more outerwear” as the backstory. The Céline lady will find plenty of Philo’s aesthetic to assimilate into her wardrobe. For tailored pieces, an oversized “nerd” style pantsuit with a slight country-music feel and a reverse shearling suit were stars. On the outerwear front, there was a great, shaggy wool bathrobe coat similar in mood to 1970s wall yarn art, and a hood detail on several coats that gave a cape effect. Knit staple bodysuits in burgundy and mustard, along with cozy sweater dressing paired with gold bangle bracelet-style brooches, also appealed. Scarf prints on dresses and shirts and lean, trim pants with varying degrees of flares rounded out the offering. Lucite bangles and earrings with a Deco-feel stood out, as did a crystal heel detail on a square-toed mule. The brand’s real cash cow seemed to sit this one out with no apparent news in the bag department, save a leather harness-style bag that was an amalgamation of mini-pouches, flap bags, and keychain baubles. That bag, complete with a fringe whip, will resonate with the woman who slays, no matter who designed it.
