Spring 2017 Menswear

New York

Welcome to “Show Notes,” in which FU’s critics offer an unfiltered peek at their musings and notebooks. For an in-depth analysis of the collections, don’t miss our forthcoming “Report.”

•Tommy Hilfiger’s Spring 2017 presentation was held in a big, bright space in the Meatpacking District, which was nice because attendees could actually go right up to the clothes and see them. That’s really difficult at a runway show, so it’s much appreciated.

•Preppy Americana—this is exactly what you would expect from Hilfiger. Even the inspiration behind the season reads classic Tommy: American heritage-meets-pop culture, the Ivy League, etc. It’s actually great that an American brand is this committed to its established aesthetic. Yes, there is a Tommy “look,” but you know what? Not a lot of other New York designers have that. Kudos to the Hilfiger team for not chasing trends, and for having faith in its own brand identity.

•Sandals with suits—yay or nay? What do we think? Sure, let’s go “yay.” This is a summer collection, and dudes need to keep cool, too.

•The sweaters where the yarn has been pulled are interesting. I like this kind of distressing.

•Those are some bold, busy florals. Classic Tommy.
