Are Ankles the Final Fashion Frontier?

From Loewe and Lanvin to DVF and Rodarte, anklets are dominating the runways en masse

Chloé’s Clare Waight Keller sent them down her Spring 2016 runway; Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli did the same at Calvin Klein that season. For Spring 2017, designers seem to have taken note—the anklet, evidently, has strong staying power, not to mention it’s further proof that ’90s nostalgia is still very much alive and well (hello, Tommy, Calvin, the Linda-Evangelista-in-the-’90s bobs at Moschino, and those sporty, logo-baring straps at Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior debut).

The ankle bracelet, which dates all the way back to ancient Egypt and first-century South East Asia, has made Spring 2017 appearances on the runways in New York, London, and Paris. From the decadent gold ankle chains replete with tiny, multicolored gems at Diane von Furstenberg and the calla lily leather anklets at Loewe (which, FYI, are available online for $330), to Bouchra Jarrar’s shiny, scintillating iterations at Lanvin and the frilly, lace-trimmed bands at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, the ankle region has become a major focus this season. Even Anthony Vaccarello embraced this part of the anatomy during his Saint Laurent debut, offering stockings with crystal YSL embellishments on—you guessed it—the ankles. Have designers run out of body parts to adorn? Is the ankle fashion’s final frontier? Probably not. Surely the fash pack will find some new region of flesh to adorn next season. In any event, click through the slideshow above to see the best ankle moments of the Spring 2017 season thus far.
