Cannes’ Red Carpet Risk-Takers

Susan Sarandon, Lily-Rose Depp, and more trade snoozy ball gowns for sartorial surprises

We’re about halfway through this year’s 69th annual Cannes Film Festival, and while there’s been a substantial amount of predictably glamorous red carpet moments (Blake Lively, Marion Cotillard, et al.), there’s also been a handful of starlets who’ve opted for riskier options. Cannes has always been something of a fashion playground where A-listers can be a bit more experimental than they can at Hollywood awards ceremonies. Perhaps the French Riviera’s je ne sais quoi appeal has something to do with it. “Cannes may be the last place where it is deemed safe to be unsafe,” wrote Eric Wilson in a 2007 New York Times article about the festival. “…Kind of like the Golden Globes before that event went into competition with the Academy Awards to become the most boring display of slip-dress conformity.” And while we’re still eagerly anticipating a Parker Posey turban-and-sunglasses moment (the Irrational Man star’s Electric Feathers look from last year was as unforgettable as it was off-beat) or a bubblegum-pink paper lantern ensemble à la Björk circa 2000, it’s only fair that we call out the actresses who’ve fearlessly walked the red carpet in thrilling unexpected wares. The festival still has six days left, so here’s hoping for more sartorial chutzpah and less predictability on carpets to come. In the meantime, click through our slideshow of Cannes’ most unconventional looks thus far.
