The Industry Toasts Anna Sui’s New Collab with Macy’s

Plus, the designer dishes on her upcoming Spring 2018 show

Just a few months ago, we predicted Western fashion was having a moment. Now, the Anna Sui x INC collection, which just dropped at Macy’s, has made all our Americana dreams come true.

The collaboration with INC (code for International Concepts, an in-house Macy’s label) is heavily inspired by Anna Sui’s imagination of the Americana icons that might shape an ideal America. “I was just dreaming of America and the America I wanted to see,” she said. The result is a mix of fringe-trimmed dresses, bell-sleeved tops, flower-embroidered jeans, and studded faux leather jackets.

It’s safe to say fashion served as an alternate universe for the legendary designer in her first capsule collection with the retail giant whose past collaborators include Karl Lagerfeld and Cynthia Rowley. Yet, as the designer noted, Macy’s was the first retailer to carry her line when she started more than 20 years ago. To her, it was a homecoming. “I kind of grew up with them,” she said.

And, of course, there was the party—an Americana wonderland staged at the same locale as New York’s theater extravaganza, Sleep No More. Journalists were taken to the green room for interviews with Sui, while models wearing some of the looks from the collection were stationed in an adjacent room. The rest of the crowd mingled over signature cocktails in a red-lit area with the likes of Anna Sui x INC ad campaign model Karen Elson.

Sui, who is currently being honored with an exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, will also show her Spring 2018 collection this week. What can we expect? The result of multiple museum visits around London, New York, and San Francisco that inspired a “hippie” and “artisanal” collection.
